I’m interested in investing a miniscule amount of money (around $1000) in the stock market just to get my feet wet. I’m in no way looking to make some huge profit or anything of the sort…just wanting to throw some cash out there, buy and sell a few stocks and just get a feel for things.
What is a good website to do that sort of thing through? With such a small amount I obviously want to keep fees to a minimum so my money doesn’t get wasted on that junk.

This is the first year I started buying a bit of stocks. I now don’t know how this will play on my tax forms. Is investing generally a good thing for TAXES (Gov’t might appreciate this?)
What will change now?
Thank you.

I am starting to look for an investment property in Phoenix or Tucson. I am after solid property with instant positive cash flow, should not be too hard to find these days. I tried to contact several of my “old” lenders who either lent funds to me or expressed interest in my deals in the past. Now when I tried to contact them they don’t respond at all. I now live overseas, but have US based income as well as plenty of equity in Arizona real estate. It’s almost as if lending business went dead. The point is that I am looking for a lender or mortgage broker that
a) understands real estate investing
b) still provides low doc loans.
I am self-employed, decent income (both US and abroad), excellent credit score, never had a credit blemish on my report. Plenty of equity in real property (land). No debt. US citizen. Experienced in real estate investing.
If you know a good contact that can work with me I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks a lot in advance!

I’m considering subscribing to Wall Street Journal for its stock index listing and current investing information. Since I’m a libertarian with liberal streak, I don’t like partisanship and politiking in the newspaper that’s supposed to focus on finance and money market, I might not waste the money on the newspaper known for its rabid right-wing bias (editorial in particular) when it comes to history and current events, etc. Are there good alternatives (bias or not) to Wall Street Journal on reliable, informed articles without heavy political bullshit like Time, Newsweek & USA Today are known for? Should I just ignore the strident political bias in that paper and turn to stock index pages?

Is there any organization out there that can teach me real estate investing ?
Filed Under investing | 4 Comments
I really would like to get into real estate investing. However, I do not have a mentor. I wish I knew someone who started with nothing and now is a productive real estate investor. I see info out there about becoming a real estate agent but nothing on how to become a real estate investor unless you read books which I have. I just think it would be so much more educationally informational for me if I worked with someone one on one. Can anyone assist me? I appreciate all answers. Thanks guys!

Best way to start investing in real estate?
Filed Under investing | 6 Comments
I’m interested in how veterans of real estate investing broke into the market. I’ve read too many books and listened to too many seminars that pin your start on deal-of-a-lifetime type purchases and shady accounting.
Do you think its worth buying, improving and selling a home in a short time? Do you think buying and renting is the better way to go? (Renting seems better if prices fall but carrying several mortgages is as scary)
What kind of financing did you use? Down Payment? (Yes/No/How Much?) How much was your initial investment if you were improving the property? Did you take out any loans to cover your improvements?
I’m in my mid 20’s. I live in the South Shore MA area. I don’t pay rent and incur about $400 monthly expenses. I have a good full time job (+50K), some saved money (+10k) and good credit. I’m very organized, fairly well educated on the subject (a lot to learn) and i have friends who are listing agents and contractors.
Any feedback/contact would be appreciated
Lois
