Question about real estate investing??

I know that we are in what is considered a “weak” house market. Would now be the best time for a beginner to a aquire properties, not a bunch but just one for starters. I would like to use the buy and hold stratgy. I’ve never owned a home myself ,so I would like to buy a home live in it for a few years(and learn more about real estate) than rent it out and purchase a duplex or possibly a 4-plex and just keep acquiring propreties to build a real estate porfolio. Would this be a good start to accompolish my goal of one day being a successful real estate investor.
